The inside story

Visiting the archaeological site of Paestum makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time, it is like walking into ancient Greece for a day. Founded in the 6th Century BC by the Greeks it became of Roman property in 273 BC and was then abandoned because of epidemics at the fall of the Roman Empire.

The site is completely surrounded by a solid stone wall, still intact, and corresponds to the Ancient City, where all the monuments and meeting points of daily life were enclosed. Within this perimeter, you can admire buildings, temples, the Greek agora, and the Roman forum, all built in different time periods.

Among the most famous ruins it is worth mentioning the three temples built in honor of Athena, Hera and Neptune, dated between 550 and 400 BC. The site is also known for its wonderful tombs, such as the famous "Tomb of the Diver".

Also, a must is a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Paestum, inaugurated in 1952 and built with the primary objective of housing the metopes of the Sanctuary of Hera. Today the Museum presents an exceptional archaeological collection which is also accompanied by works of contemporary art.

The Archaeological Park of Paestum and Velia is open from Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 7.30 pm. The site is easily accessible by train: Naples-Reggio Calabria railway line, Paestum stop. The park is just a 15 minutes walk from the station.
