The inside story
Antwerp has its fair share of hidden gems, but Vlaeykensgang is something special. Nestled between two busy streets in the heart of Antwerp, the enchanting alleyway twists and turns pasts picturesque buildings, boutiques and cafes. And while its right in the centre of town, it somehow feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Dating back to the 16th-century, Vlaeykensgang is one of Antwerp’s only remaining medieval streets. The city’s poorest people used to live here, along with cobblers in charge of ringing the nearby cathedral’s emergency bell. Vlaeykensgang was on the brink of demolition during the 1960s, but antique dealer Axel Vervoordt came to the rescue by purchasing and restoring it. Thanks to him, the peaceful and much-loved backstreet still exists today.
