Just under an hourâs drive from Dublin, the Wicklow Mountains boast some of eastern Irelandâs most beautiful landscapes. County Wicklow is known as âthe Garden of Irelandâ, and there are dozens of scenic hiking trails and drives to enjoy in the Wicklow Mountains National Park. One of the most famous is the Military Road through the haunting, barren boglands of the Sally Gap. When it comes to heritage, the monastic site of Glendalough, with its thousand-year-old Round Tower, is world-class. Glendaloughâs name comes from the Gaelic for âValley of the Two Lakesâ, and the Upper and Lower lakes are Insta-perfect. Historically, lead, zinc and silver were mined in the mountains, and there are abandoned mining âghost villagesâ a stoneâs throw from the Upper Lake.
