You’ll leave the sleek, modern streets of Zurich behind and head for the mountains on this daytrip to the Jungfrau region of the Swiss Alps. The snow-capped mountains, glaciers and waterfalls look like scenes from a film, but you’ll be experiencing the real deal as you head to the renowned mountain resort of Grindelwald, the village of Lauterbrunnen and the town of Interlaken – known as the local shopping hub and gateway to the Alps.
The comfy coach will whisk you up the scenic twists and turns to Grindelwald, where you’ll find pine forests and rustic chalets dotting the valley. But the scene-stealer is the view of the famous triple peaks of Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. There’s a host of activities you can try while you’re in the resort, like taking the cable car to Mt First, followed by a strut on the 45-meter-long Cliff Walk – it’s a metal suspension bridge that juts out over the valley for incredible views, but isn’t ideal if you don’t have a head for heights. You can pick from one of the many hiking trails that are open all-year round, hire a Trottibike scooters – a kind of bike and scooter hybrid – to speed around the alpine meadows or, in winter, you could take the train up to the Alpiglen for an adrenaline-pumping sledge down to Brandegg.
Your guide will take you to Lauterbrunnen next, a beautiful village nestled between towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls. You’ll instantly understand how, with its misty mountains and achingly pretty wooden houses, the Lauterbrunnen valley inspired epic fantasy writer, J.R.R. Tolkien. There’s free time here to wander the charming village, grab a hot chocolate and admire Staubbach Falls - Switzerland’s third-highest waterfall – before heading back to Zurich.
