The inside story

Located at the top of Corcovado Mountain, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the statue of Christ the Redeemer is certainly Brazil’s most famous landmark, located in the first sector of the Tijuca Forest National Park, over 2,300 feet above sea level.

Considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, from the statue, you can admire incredible views of the entire city. Created by French sculptor Paul Landowski and built by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, in collaboration with the French engineer Albert Caquot, the Christ the Redeemer statue was constructed between 1922 and 1931. The statue is 98 feet tall, excluding its 26-foot pedestal, and the arms stretch over 90 feet wide.

You can take a train, van or hike to the statue. The most popular way is to take the cog train through the Atlantic Forest until you reach the top of Corcovado. From there, you can climb the 220 steps, take the escalator or elevator to reach the foot of the statue.

The Christ the Redeemer represents a symbol of Christianity across the world and an important cultural icon of both Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. In 2012 UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site.
