Castle Het Steen, also known as Stone Castle, is a historic fortress nestled in the heart of Antwerp. Dating back to the 11th century, it’s officially Antwerp’s oldest building, and has played a significant role in the city’s history, serving as a prison for over 500 years, as well as a fish warehouse and a ship museum.
Built on the banks of the river Scheldt, Castle Het Steen has witnessed many battles and sieges over the centuries. Its thick stone walls, towers, and moat are a testament to its defensive capabilities, which were crucial in protecting the city from invaders. Today, the popular tourist attraction draws visitors from all over who come to explore its rich history and picturesque surroundings.
